Most of the calls we take about possums in Paddington start the same way, a heavy thump or a scratching sound directly above a bedroom or hallway ceiling. That is almost always the roof cavity, the open space between the ceiling and the underside of the roof sheeting or tiles. It stays warm, it is dry, and once a possum finds a way in it tends to keep using the same route night after night.
When you call about a roof cavity job, we note the rooms where the noise is loudest and the times you hear it, then pass that to a crew working Paddington roofs regularly. On site, the crew traces the sound back toward the roofline, checking ridge capping, valleys, gable ends and any spot where a tile has slipped or a sheet has lifted, since these are the usual paths a possum uses to get from a tree branch onto the roof and into the cavity below.
Once the crew has found the main opening, they fit a one-way door so the possum can leave under its own steam but cannot get back in through that spot. After the roof cavity is clear, the opening is sealed and any smaller gaps nearby are closed off in the same visit, so the possum cannot simply shift a metre along the roofline and find another way in.
