Gable vents sit high up at the triangular end of a pitched roof and are meant to let air move through the roof cavity, but the gap around an old or damaged vent is also one of the easier ways for a possum to get in. Around Paddington, homes with timber gable ends and older louvre or mesh vents are the ones we hear about most, since the fittings can warp, rust or come loose from the frame over time.
When a gable vent looks like the likely entry point, the crew we book checks it from both outside, standing back to look at the fit against the gable end, and from inside the roof cavity, looking for daylight or a draft coming through the same spot. If the vent is where the possum is getting in, a one-way door goes over it first so nothing already inside is sealed in by mistake.
Once the roof cavity is confirmed clear, the crew fits a new vent cover or mesh that still lets air through but closes the gap a possum was using, and checks nearby gable vents on the same roofline while they are up there.
